One thing is for certain in a world filled with uncertainties and that is -- things are always changing. Because things are always changing, we as leaders are constantly being challenged to change both ourselves and our methods of ministry. One of the many things I have come to realize as a pastor is that if we as a local church do not change the way we do ministry, two years from now we will have very few new people in our church family. Last month I wrote a short article on “Grace Giving” and wanted to continue the thought this month by including some thoughts on the tithe. Anyone who has been involved in church for any length of time knows that the word tithe means 10%. Sadly, the tithe, which began before the law with Abraham, has been turned into law by man. This has produced much fear and is often used by ministers as a tool for manipulating their congregations.

A number of years ago I was challenged by the Lord concerning the lack of teaching that I had given to our church family on the biblical model for giving and prosperity. As I meditated on the lack that I saw most people in our congregation experiencing, I realized that, as their pastor, I had failed them. Sadly, I realized that for the most part I had avoided the subject of giving, and things had gotten to the place where I would almost apologize for receiving an offering. While I knew this stemmed from the abuses I had seen in fund raising in the church at large, my avoidance of the subject was wrong. In reality, I came to see that my failure to teach solid biblical principles for giving and receiving was causing our people to remain broke and easy targets for the abuses I so deeply despised. Ever since the tragic day of September 11 people have been left searching for answers of which for the most part the answers have left many filled with fear. All across the nation today and around the world people are beginning to faint with fear as we face the toughest economic time since the great depression. I believe and have been communicating since September 11 that this can be the churches finest hour and I still believe this to be true today. More people are open to the gospel right now than in my lifetime so I conclude that we the church must seize he opportunity that has been set before us.
